Week 2 of the Art With Heart Team Colour Hop is here, and this week we’re celebrating the soft, peachy glow of Crisp Cantaloupe. For my project, I created a weekly journal page using the beautiful Waterside Retreat suite. The gentle tones and peaceful imagery pair perfectly with this In Color.Journal
Page LayoutBase layers & measurements:
- Crisp Cantaloupe cardstock: 190mm × 132mm
- Waterside Retreat DSP (main panel): 102mm × 132mm
- Smaller DSP pieces: cut to the size they appear on the sheet (no trimming needed)
These layers create pockets where I can tuck in my weekly journaling pages behind the larger DSP and slip little words of encouragement behind the smaller pieces.
Fussy‑Cut Bicycle & Spoke‑Tracing Technique
I wanted the bicycle to be a feature, so I fussy cut the bicycle and removed the center of the wheel. To add the spokes back onto the DSP, I used a simple tracing‑paper method:
- Trace the spokes lightly in pencil onto tracing paper.
- Flip the tracing paper face‑down onto the DSP.
- Shade over the back of the traced lines — the pencil transfers onto the DSP.
- Adhere the bicycle over the transferred spokes.
I was genuinely impressed with how well this worked. It looked so good that I ended up using that bicycle on a card instead of the journal page. The bicycle on the journal page is a fresh one — I didn’t repeat the spoke technique because I wanted to 3D the bike, and time was not on my side.
Cattail Reeds – Layered Colour Technique
To add more detail around the bicycle, I cut four cattail reeds:
- Two in Old Olive
- Two in Crisp Cantaloupe
I trimmed the cattails off the Crisp Cantaloupe pieces and adhered them onto the Old Olive reeds. This gave me two‑tone cattails that coordinated beautifully with the rest of the page. I then attached them in front the bicycle for a soft, natural look.
Sentiments
All sentiments are stamped on Very Vanilla cardstock using Crisp Cantaloupe ink from the Waterside Retreat stamp set. The warm tone keeps everything cohesive and gentle.
Finishing Touches
I added In Color dots for texture and interest. They give just enough dimension without overwhelming the soft palette.
